For the longest time, I thought that my ability to see a lot of different perspectives made me flaky, unreliable, uninformed, and, well, just not very smart. Isn’t it interesting how our God-given strengths that make us unique and exceptional, are also the ones we immediately find flaws with?! Something I’ve come to realize as an adult is how much our brains and mindsets have been dramatically shaped by the environments we grew up in, the media we consumed, and the people we’ve been surrounded by. Even if we don’t necessarily agree with what someone is sharing (whether it’s politics, religion, human rights, or even sports), we tend to go along with what they’re saying because they believe so strongly in it. That just feels soooo much safer than asking our own questions – I mean, we don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable after all, right?
In today’s episode, I want to talk about why you need to ask better questions, and really, get back to a place of having quality conversations with others. It seems like our society as a whole has lost the ability to think critically, and we simply agree with others because it feels easier (and safer), instead of ‘rocking the boat’. If we think back to 2020 and what a wild time that was, it seemed like everybody was judging everybody else for what they were doing/not doing, and HUGE wedges were put in place like never before. After having many conversations with family and friends over the last few years (who come from all walks of life), I’ve found that we’re actually more similar than you may think. Many of us find ourselves in the middle with important issues today, and honestly, being able to genuinely connect in community with others can help us SO, so much – especially if we think we’re alone in feeling how we do.
The work that I’ve been doing the last few years has pushed me to help others step outside of their comfort zones, challenge expectations, and break through limiting beliefs. I’ve LOVED getting to do this, but I’ve also come to the realization that I’m still holding myself back when it comes to questioning, and going against the norm. Maybe you can relate to this in some way; if you can, I want you to give yourself permission to dream, and do, and simply just approach things in a fresh, and different way.
I can’t wait to show you how I’m doing this in my own life. I plan to refresh some pieces here on the podcast, but please know that this will ALWAYS be the place to gather in growth – this is a space to ask better questions, reconsider your mindset, and just be more curious. I truly appreciate you being here with an open heart and mind, and I’m incredibly excited for what is to come!!
In this episode, Ask Better Questions, we cover:
- Why our society as a whole has lost the ability to think critically, and simply just ‘be’ in conversation with others who have differing beliefs and opinions
- Agreeing with others because it feels easier, instead of asking questions and sharing a different perspective in fear of ‘rocking the boat’
- Why people are a LOT more similar than we may think + understanding how vital community and connection is for all of us
- My recent realization that I’ve been holding myself back from asking better questions, all for the illusion of peace + why I’m no longer doing this going forward
